How to add a text watermark to a PDF

Label your own working copy with a clear note such as “Draft,” “Sample” or “For review.”

A text watermark is a visible label placed over or near a page’s content. It can help readers recognize a draft or identify a review copy. It is not a security control: a watermark does not encrypt a document, prevent copying, or prove who created it.

Add a text watermark in a few steps

  1. Open the Watermark PDF tool and select your own PDF or a document you may edit.
  2. Enter a short label, such as “DRAFT”.
  3. Choose the position, text color and opacity. A lighter opacity can keep text readable beneath the label.
  4. Create the watermarked copy and inspect several pages before sharing.

Pick a clear placement

A diagonal center label is easy to notice but may cover content. A smaller top or bottom label may work better for a review note. Look for important text, page numbers, diagrams and footnotes that could be obscured. Choose a contrasting but not overpowering color.

Keep an untouched original

The tool creates a separate watermarked PDF. Save the original as well so you can make a clean copy later. Add watermarks only to files you own or have permission to modify. Do not use them to disguise authorship or remove another creator’s attribution.

Watermarks and document security

A visible text label can discourage casual reuse or clarify a document’s status, but it can also be edited or covered. If you need confidentiality, use appropriate access controls, encryption and sharing practices instead of relying on a watermark.
